350 East Mids jobs to go at Tarmac

The construction company behind projects such as Wembley Stadium has said it will axe more than 350 jobs across the East Midlands. The chief executive of Tarmac Building Products said that “tough underlying market conditions and continuing uncertainly of demand” meant that staff across sites in Lincolnshire, Derby and Nottinghamshire were at risk of redundancy.

The Wolverhampton-based company said that all Tarmac Building Products Limited Precast Solutions and Flooring sites would close, in a move which will see 550 jobs lost across the country.

Tallington in Lincolnshire will be worst hit, with 217 jobs set to go. Sixty-nine employees face redundancy in Lound, Nottinghamshire, and 71 jobs are set for the axe in Derby.

Twenty-seven fitters and about 50 temporary staff across the UK will also be affected, said Tarmac.

In a statement, chief executive Blair Illingworth said: “Tough underlying market conditions and continuing uncertainly of demand have led us to review the options for the future of our Precast Solutions and Flooring business, and we have taken the difficult decision to consider its closure. This affects sites across the UK and, unfortunately, means that around 550 people are at risk of redundancy.

"It is not a decision we have taken lightly and we have begun a 90-day consultation period with employees affected by this. We are also liaising with our customers to discuss how this could impact them.”

Henlade in Somerset faces 106 job cuts, while three positions are set to go in Dolyhir, Wales.

The company was involved in the construction of Wembley Stadium and the Emirates Stadium.
