West Mids businesses bag Olympics contracts
Twenty-one ‘London 2012’ businesses in the West Midlands have secured contracts totalling £2.7m in the run-up to Christmas. So far, more than 10,000 businesses in the region have registered on the CompeteFor system, whereby companies vie for contracts for the upcoming Games.
Nearly £464m worth of business has now been bagged by firms in nearly all of the region’s 59 parliamentary constituencies.
Jim Johnston, business manager for the 2012 Games, said: “This is a remarkable achievement by West Midlands businesses and means we’ve not only sprinted past our ambitious £400m target well ahead of the Games-time deadline but we've excelled in the run-up to Christmas as well.
“The West Midlands business community has truly embraced the opportunity and helped to net the regional economy more than its fair share of Olympic profits and related jobs.
“The fact that contracts have been won by businesses in nearly every part of the region is also hugely impressive and reinforces the West Midlands’ collective determination to compete for and win new business, both London 2012 Games contracts and new opportunities emerging as the economy begins to recover.”
Many of these successes have been achieved through the CompeteFor procurement system, which has been set up by the London 2012 organisations to act as an online brokerage service between London 2012 buyers and potential suppliers across the country.
