Employment regs are stifling growth - survey
More than 80 per cent of senior business directors in the West Midlands believe that there is too much employment regulation for employers to comply with. That’s according to a survey by law firm Irwin Mitchell, which suggests that employment regulations are “stifling opportunities for growth”.
Respondents named legislation such as the maternity leave directive and the Equality Act as hindering their chances of growth.
Eighty six per cent of business leaders said that they were “concerned” that the number of employment tribunals would increase in 2011, and 61 per cent said they felt that recent changes in employment regulations, such as the Equality Act, will have a negative impact on their company.
Thirty seven per cent of people picked out maternity and paternity leave as the one aspect of current employment law they would like to change.
Chris Piggott, employment law partner at Irwin Mitchell in Birmingham, said: “Businesses are telling us that they are confused by the overwhelming amount of employment regulation. There has been so much change recently in employment law that businesses aren’t sure where they stand, and are naturally worried about the consequences.”
