East Mids shoppers brave cold
Christmas shopping in the East Midlands has not suffered as much as other UK regions as a result of the cold snap, according to figures.
Research by Synovate shows that footfall was down 24.3 per cent across the UK on Saturday compared to last year – but East Midlands footfall only dropped 3.1 per cent.
The worst affected areas were the West Midlands, down 33.1 per cent, South East England, down 32 per cent, and London, down 28.6 per cent. The report is based on a sample of 6,000 retail outlets and does not include supermarkets.
The only area to come close to the East Midlands was the North East, down just 3.2 per cent, whereas Scotland’s retail footfall was down 4.2 per cent.
The survey was done on Saturday 18 December, which is termed ‘Super Saturday’ as it is the last Saturday before Christmas – traditionally one of the busiest days of the retail year.
