Chamber welcomes EU regulations announcement

Government moves to reduce the impact of EU regulations on British companies will be “welcomed by business”. That’s according to the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, which has voiced its support for the ending of so called “gold-plating” of regulations.

Business secretary Vince Cable has set out a series of new principles that the government will use when introducing European measures into UK law. These moves will end the so-called “gold-plating” of regulations so that British businesses are not put at a disadvantage relative to their European competitors.

The key to the new measures will be the principle of copying out the text of European directives directly into UK law. This ‘copy out’ principle will mean that British interpretations of European law do not unfairly restrict British companies.

Commenting on the announcement, John Dowson, head of policy at the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber, said: “Reducing the amount of red tape burdens placed on business is one of the chamber’s key priorities, so today’s announcement is a welcome one, although the proof will be in the implementation of the recommendations.

“Chamber members regularly raise concerns about the over-zealous implementation of EU regulations by Whitehall, but if the Government is serious about reducing the administrative burden, then the so-called ‘gold-plating’ of EU regulations has to stop.”
