£4m Birmingham lighting deal for Telensa
Public service provider Amey has awarded a five-year contract worth £4m to Essex-based Telensa to provide Birmingham with street lighting. It is to support the city's 25-year highways maintenance and management service.
Amey, which along with Birmingham City Council is responsible for nearly 100,000 streetlights as well as roads, bridges and tunnels, chose Telensa’s PLANet system, which uses advanced wireless technology, to communicate with its lights.
Councillor Timothy Huxtable, cabinet member for transportation and regeneration, said: “I have no doubt that the management of the LED street lights will also help to greatly improve the safety, security and the general environment of streets in the city.”
The PLANet system will be used on all new and existing streetlights to control their switching and dimming and will also monitor the performance of each light on a daily basis, saving about 40 per cent of energy compared to conventional street lighting.
