Chamber scoops national award

Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce has won a national award for its lobbying activities. The chamber scooped the prize for Most Effective Campaigning at the British Chambers of Commerce’s annual awards.

The chamber’s membership services and international trade teams also finished second in their respective categories.

The policy and representation team, led by head of policy John Dowson, co-ordinated campaigns on behalf of businesses including making the business case and successfully lobbying for the creation of a high-speed rail hub in the East Midlands.

The team was also instrumental in delaying the implementation of Nottingham’s controversial Workplace Parking Levy by two years, saving local firms £13m.

George Cowcher, chief executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber, said: “We are naturally delighted that the chamber has again achieved accredited status under the BCC’s new Chamber Excellence Model, so to win such a prestigious award on the back of that is the icing on the cake.

“This chamber is the third largest in the country and is the leading voice for business in the East Midlands. Its views are regularly sought by key political decision-makers, from the local authorities right up to the heart of government and this award win is a clear demonstration of what a powerful and influential organisation the chamber really is.”
