Entrepreneur cooks up venture with fellowship grant
A Keele-based entrepreneur has set up her own Indian food business after receiving £8,500 in funding. Gurpreet Grewal-Kang will launch Masala Tiffin after obtaining the grant from the Enterprise Fellowship Scheme.
Grewal-Kang, who works at Keele University, said she found “a gap in the market” for a fresh and authentic curry sauce. She said she was inspired during a trip to India in 2009, through which she witnessed a “disturbing” level of poverty.
A donation will be made from each pack of Masala Tiffin curry sauce sold to benefit charities and community projects in India and across the world, said the entrepreneur.
Grewal-Kang said: “I used an old family recipe that had been passed down from generation to generation to create a healthy and authentic curry sauce.
“The Research and Enterprise Services (RES) team at Keele and the EFS project have provided me with invaluable expert support, knowledge and advice to help kick-start my business. RES’s connections into the ‘real’ business world have helped me secure the perfect mentor for my business.”
Grewal-Kang will launch her business this Thursday (2 December) at University College Birmingham with a live cookery demonstration.
The Enterprise Fellowship Scheme is open to recent Keele graduates, members of staff and registered students at Keele University. EFS is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and operates at eight universities across the West Midlands.
