Work has begun on the construction of a new £1.9m sports centre in Langley Mill. The new facility at Aldercar Community Language College will have space for four new badminton courts, a fitness room, changing facilities, and two classrooms.

The start of on-site work on the project was commemorated by a visit from Councillor Mike Longden, Derbyshire County Council cabinet member for education.

Councillor Longden said: “This will be a great new facility to benefit current and future pupils at Aldercar Community Language College and the wider community.

“We’re committed to giving young people the best start in life. The new sports centre and classroom will provide excellent accommodation for lessons and the opportunity for a healthy and active lifestyle.”

Construction is due to be completed in July 2011 so the building is ready for use at the start of the 2011/12 academic year.
