Stewart Wren is to be the keynote speaker at Birmingham's upcoming 'Breakfast Connection' event, hosted by Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Birmingham Forward. Wren, chief executive of Service Birmingham, has been credited as playing a "big part" in boosting the city authority's IT services.

The event, due to take place on 25 November at the Crowne Plaza hotel, will feature Wren discussing how he played a "critical part in helping to revolutionise the council’s approach to ICT".

Service Birmingham is a joint venture between Capita Business Services and Birmingham City Council, and is responsible for running the latter’s information and communications technology.

He is set to say this was achieved against a backdrop of public service cuts and has prepared Birmingham to "weather the storms of the recession".

Wren is also due to talk about how the transformation brought about at the council is relevant to other public sector organisations and also to private business as well.

Wren joined Service Birmingham after a quarter of a century spent in the ICT industry, He is probably best known for playing a leading role in the acquisition and integration of British Rail Business Systems (BRBS) by Sema Group.

Prior to joining Service Birmingham, he was a director of The Xafinity Group, a specialist provider of pension and employee benefits.
