Berryman loses partner

Another solicitor has jumped ship from East Midlands law firm Berryman. Following the firm’s merger with Birmingham-based Shakespeare Putsman earlier this month, former partner Scott Farnsworth has left the Nottingham-based company to launch his own legal practice.

Farnsworth has started his own legal practice, Scott Farnsworth Associates, which will specialise in providing intellectual property legal services.

His departure follows former Berrymans solicitors Ginny Hallam and Tom Gray, who both left to join rival law firm Geldards over the summer.

Farnsworth’s company will specialise in providing advice to organisations carrying out research and working in lifesciences or with engineering technologies.

The firm will be based at Nottingham’s BioCity.

Scott said: “I am very excited by the opportunity to grow my own business and take it in directions that are a refreshing move away from the usual model of a law firm. The practice will be dedicated to providing a wide range of expert intellectual property legal services to businesses, organisations and individuals with particular interests in lifesciences and engineering technologies, and will make full use of my extensive experience over 18 years of practising intellectual property law.”

“The new practice is largely made up of pharmaceutical - both branded and generic - and biotechnology companies, as well as manufacturers of medical devices and other engineering technologies.”

Scott had worked for Berrymans since 2004, where he helped establish the firm’s life sciences sector team.

In the East Midlands, Scott advised on the establishment and governance of the innovation networks for the East Midlands region, for the healthcare and bioscience, food and drink, sustainable construction and transport sectors, under the regional innovation strategies, which were implemented by Emda.

Scott said: “The UK has moved towards a knowledge based economy and technology-led organisations require specialist advisers to help them through the technical, commercial and legal minefields that intellectual property throws into their pathways. From whichever angle you approach intellectual property, complex technical, commercial and legal issues can often arise. My job is to get the legal stuff right – piece of cake.”
