E.ON pulls out of carbon comp

Share | |

Electricity and gas company E.ON has withdrawn its Kingsnorth power station in Kent from the government's carbon capture and storage (CCS) competition. The Coventry-headquartered business says it cannot meet the deadline.

Kingsnorth was one of two schemes shortlisted as part of the competition to build the UK's first commercial CCS scheme.

But the company said this week that, having already postponed the building last year, “the economic conditions are still not right” to go ahead.

Dr Paul Golby, chief executive of E.ON UK, said carbon capture and storage was vital in the fight against climate change but it would now focus on its Dutch power plant.

The existing Kingsnorth power station is due to close by the end of 2015.

E.ON claims to be one of the leading green generators in the UK, with 21 wind farms, one of the UK's largest dedicated biomass power stations, the country’s first wave power generator and ambitious plans to cut carbon.
