Metro shows commitment, says government
Local transport minister Norman Baker says plans announced in the Comprehensive Spending Review shows a commitment towards transport spending and the West Midlands. They include plans to extend the Metro tram service from Birmingham Snow Hill station to New Street station, to carry on funding the redevelopment of New Street station and to give the High Speed 2 rail line the go-ahead.
Speaking at Snow Hill station, Baker said: “I’m here with good news, which is the extension of Midland Metro and we’re very keen to do that even in difficult times when there are enormous challenges with public finances.
“The government recognises that investing in public transport and transport generally is a good thing because it helps generate jobs and helps builds the economy back.
“This is sensible, targeted investment that will help us build for the future and create jobs, in this case in Birmingham and the West Midlands.”
