rg+p sign up to YMCA

Leicester-based architect rg+p has been appointed to refurbish the city’s YMCA. With the latest contract, the firm says it is now working on more than £22m-worth of new projects.

This includes ten sites across Leicestershire. Its portfolio of projects include a £9.8m affordable housing scheme at the Wolsey in Belgrave and 500 units of student accommodation worth between £1.5m and £3m. The firm has also finalised an agreement to design 700 private apartments totalling £3.5m, and a £4m major refurbishment project in Leicester.

Bill Smedley, managing director, rg+p said: "We seem to be ‘bucking the trend’ in many ways, after a tough few years for both rg+p and the construction industry as a whole. It is also heartening to see that although there is a substantial amount of regeneration earmarked for Leicester city centre, through various government funding initiatives, private enterprise is also re-investing in the city again now."

He said that the YMCA project win was “substantial”, and added: "It’s great to see the diversity of projects currently underway and fantastic to think that we are really involved in changing the skyline of Leicester."
