Jobseekers in the East Midlands are fighting off competition from 11 other applicants per role. That’s according to research from recruitment website totaljobs.com, which revealed the number of jobseekers in the East Midlands has increased by 17 per cent in the third quarter.

Despite a 2 per cent rise in the number of jobs available in the region, more applicants are fighting for roles in the East Midlands. Totaljobs said the number of jobseekers in the region is the highest since it began the quarterly poll in 2008.

John Salt, director of totaljobs.com, said: "Despite a rise in the number of jobs in the East Midlands, ONS figures point to an increase in the number of long term unemployed.

"Our figures show that those who have been out of work for some time are apply for more jobs, deploying a scattergun approach to job seeking in their desperation, applying for jobs and in sectors they would not ordinarily have considered. In addition we have noted growing confidence among those still in work.

"Feeling more secure in the job they are in, they are starting to look for better paid work on the next move up the career ladder. These two factors – longer term unemployment on the one hand and growing confidence amongst those with a job on the other – are pushing up applications per jobs, increasing competition for work."

Job vacancies in the East Midlands’ education sector dropped by 34 per cent over the third quarter, while the general public sector jobs on offer fell by 30 per cent.

Customer services vacancies rose by 5 per cent, but this was counteracted by a 44 per cent rise in applications, forcing the number of applicants per job up to 23.
