Leicester soars up sustainability list

Share | |

Leicester has been named as the UK’s second most sustainable city. An index of the country’s 20 largest cities, compiled by the Forum for the Future, also includes Derby and Nottingham.

The Sustainable Cities Index ranks the largest cities in order of sustainability with three main criteria. These include environmental performance, quality of life and how prepared the city is for the future. Leicester rose from fourth place in 2009 to take the second highest spot on the list.

Nottingham fell from its 2009 position of number eight to number 12 on the list. Derby, which overtook Wolverhampton as the 20th largest city to enter the list, came in at number 17.

According to the Forum for the Future: “Leicester performs best on the environment and does well on future-proofing, but falls behind on quality of life."

Although Derby entered the list near the bottom, it sets the benchmark for the other cities on recycling, achieving a top rate of 44 per cent of household waste.

Newcastle topped the list for the second consecutive year.
