MTP optimistic on government support

The Merseyside Transport Partnership (MTP) is optimistic about government support for sustainable transport initiatives. This is despite admitting the policy and funding environment remains "fluid".

It welcomed local transport minister Norman Baker's remarks that local sustainable transport funding will be ring-fenced following the Comprehensive Spending Review.

The organisation is currently meeting groups from the public, private and voluntary sectors to consult on its third Local Transport Plan (LTP3).

Neil Scales, Chair of mTP, said: “The establishment of a dedicated Local Sustainable Transport Fund is a clear indication of the significance that the new government places on work to encourage smarter travel choices.

"Funding such as this will enable us to build on current activity during LTP3 and develop a package of measures that will continue to support economic growth and reduce carbon emissions."

Maresa Molloy, head of policy at Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, said: “Investment in sustainable transport can benefit businesses in a number of ways, from reducing the amount spent on parking contracts to providing a healthier workforce as well as reducing their carbon emissions. A cleaner environment supports the city region’s strategic priorities including the development of the low carbon and tourism economies.”
