Councillors finalise £150m cutbacks

Nottinghamshire County Council has said it will consider 164 budget-cutting proposals at its full council meeting next Thursday. Councillors are set to approve plans to cut £150m from the council’s budget over the next three years.

Twenty-five per cent of the savings are expected to come from reducing management and administration support.

The council also outlined changes to the way its back office service would run in order to make up part of the £69m the council must shave from its 2011/2012 budget.

Cost-cutting measures include reducing library opening times and reviewing 290 subsidised bus services. The council also plans to reduce the number of managers it employs by 30 percent by having fewer management levels.

The leader of Nottinghamshire City Council Kay Cutts said that “difficult decisions must be taken”.

She said: "We are currently facing an extremely challenging financial future and in order to address these issues it is essential that we lay the foundations to enable us to make the council fit for the future.

"As a responsible council, we have to address the increasing number of vulnerable children that are at risk or in our care and looking after the rising numbers of older people.

"Difficult decisions must be taken and it is important that residents and service users make their views known on these early proposals so we can make informed decisions.

"We will be putting forward our full proposals for next year’s budget in December and will be making a final decision in February.”
