Shaylor tunes up to £7.1m arts centre deal

Aldridge-based Shaylor Construction has secured a £7.1m contract to build a new performing arts centre for two Birmingham schools. The centre will provide a concert hall to seat an audience of 400 and a performance space for a 90-strong orchestra.

The space will be created for King Edward’s School in Birmingham and its sister school, King Edward VI High School for Girls, on the existing Edgbaston campus.

In addition to the performance and audience space, Shaylor will construct a separate drama studio to seat 125, and several rooms for teaching and rehearsal.

The new centre will be named after former pupil Paul Ruddock, whose “substantial donation” made the project possible, said the school.

Detailed design development of the project is currently underway and work on site is due to commence in November 2010. The centre is due to be completed in early 2012.
