Kemble completes eco houses

Hereford-based housing company, Kemble Housing, has unveiled a £1.8m development. Project leaders described the Queen’s Meadow scheme as “a landmark development” due to its eco design.

The development, built in the village of Wigmore, is the first scheme in Herefordshire to be built to level four in the government’s Code for Sustainable Homes.

It comprises 14 four-, three- and two-bedroom homes, which were all leased through a local lettings plan, which gives priority to people with links to the village.

Renewable sources of energy, including solar panels and air source heat pumps will be used in each home to heat hot water and radiators. A pump system will also cut water usage by up to 30 per cent, recycling rainwater from gutters to flush toilets in the homes.

Karen Pritchard, assistant director of Kemble Housing, said: “Queen’s Meadow is the new face of rural housing, designed to meet local housing need while taking us one step closer to zero carbon.

“By fitting each home with renewable energy we have cut out gas and brought down electricity prices for our customers, helping to protect our countryside and maintain a sustainable approach to housebuilding.”

Kemble Housing is part of West Midlands housing association, WM Housing.

The work was carried out by Gloucester-based Markey Construction at a contract value of £1.4m.
