Spearing Waite advises Connells' energy move

Leicester solicitor Spearing Waite has advised national estate agent Connells on its acquisition of Vibrant Energy Matters, an energy assessor business.

The Friar Lane law firm’s corporate team, led by partner Martin Smith, spearheaded the deal which was made for an undisclosed sum.

Vibrant Energy Matters (VEM), based in Gwent, was formed in November 2009 following the merger of Green Energy Matters and Vibrant Energy.

VEM has more than 100 staff and the capacity to complete over 100,000 energy performance certificates (EPCs) annually. Clients include estate agents, letting agencies, landlords and local authorities.

Adrian Gill, of Leighton Buzzard-based Connells, said: “The deal is mutually beneficial, giving both parties more business and extending our reach in areas such as social housing.”

Martin Smith said the deal was “particularly timely” given the coalition government’s Green Deal Programme which is due to be introduced in 2012.

He said: “The programme’s implementation will see many thousands of homes – not just those on the market for sale and rent – subject to energy audits as the Government strives to encourage greater energy efficiency in UK households.

“Spearing Waite was very pleased to act for Connells in this important strategic transaction and at a time when EPCs are set to become a bigger part of the whole house selling process.”
