Council takes £600,000 investment to market
Leicester City Council is in discussions with market traders over ideas for a £600,000 investment to improve the city’s market.
The city council says it has approved spending the money on revamping the market to offer more flexible market space and to improve the surrounding environment.
Leicester City Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for the market, Councillor Paul Westley, has met market traders to give them a chance to take part in influencing the designs and ideas.
The proposals include introducing 20 gazebo-style stalls and a seating area, creating more flexible open space and bringing in alternative stalls such as arts, crafts and collectibles on Mondays and Thursdays.
Improvements would also be made to the market’s toilets, signs and street furniture. The market roof would be cleaned and waste-recycling facilities introduced.
Councillor Westley said: “Leicester Market is a well-loved part of the city, and the decision to invest £600,000 in improving it is very welcome.
“We have talked through the proposals with traders and are very keen that they contribute to the plans.
“We recognise the importance of the market within the city centre retail circuit, and the role it plays in linking the major areas of the city.
“The market employs a lot of local people and we are very keen to continue to support local businesses.”
The revamp is due to start in January, and is expected to take two months to complete.
