Construction starts on £20m care village
Work has started on the creation of a £20m art care community in Swadlincote. The project has already been nominated for the National House Building Design Award, despite having yet to be built.
The centre will include a 32-bed residential care home and 88 apartments available for rent or purchase for anyone aged over 55.
It will also feature an information centre, clinic consultancy room, gym, restaurant, hairdressers and IT suite.
Housing association Trident Group is investing £13.75m into the scheme, which includes a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). Swadlincote County Council is contributing the remaining £7m.
The development is a partnership between South Derbyshire District Council, Derbyshire County Council and the Trident Group, with the land provided by both councils.
Councillor John Lemmon, chairman of the Housing and Community Services Committee at the district council, said: “Without the support of the county council and the Trident Group, this would never have happened. A project of this scale is unique for a small town like Swadlincote, and is the first of its kind in Derbyshire.
"We are very proud of our achievements and believe this will be a fantastic addition to our district for decades to come.”
The development is expected to take 21 months to complete.
