Midlands M&A activity drops
Merger and acquisition activity in the Midlands fell dramatically during the third quarter of the year. Just 100 transactions were made in the region in the three months to August, compared with 154 in the second quarter, according to a report by Nottingham-based Experian.
However, the value of the deals made fell at a slower rate. The total value of the region’s deals in the third quarter was £1,470m, compared with £1,677m in the three months previous.
The results came from information collected by data provider Experian.
Wendy Smith, business development manager at Experian Corpfin, said: “Although the UK returned to growth in the final quarter of 2009, the level of deal making in the UK since then has yet to reflect this. Deals tend to slow down during Q3 of any year, so quarter on quarter figures show a seasonal decline.”
Smith added that the UK fared better than Europe, where there was a slightly larger decline in the volume and the value of deals also fell.
