Carillion in £15m academy deal
The finalisation of a £15m deal between Wolverhampton-headquartered construction firm Carillion and Southampton City Council means work will begin within a month on Southampton’s first academy building project.
The £15m Oasis Academy Mayfield in Sholing is the first of two academy projects in the city worth a combined £35m and Carillion is also the preferred bidder for the one in Lord’s Hill, a planning application which was submitted two weeks ago.
Councillor Paul Holmes, cabinet member for children’s services & learning, said: “We have been successful in securing an excellent construction partner and gaining planning permission for an iconic school. Not only that, this project has come in on budget.”
The new Oasis Academy Mayfield will feature a large, central learning space that can be adapted for a multitude of uses. There will also be a "state-of-the-art" theatre space. The building features solar panels and natural ventilation, which will help to reduce the carbon footprint of the school by 60 per cent over its lifetime.
