Pleasley Colliery refurb complete

Share | |

Work has finished on a multi-million pound restoration project to transform a disused colliery site near Bolsover in Derbyshire. Pleasley Colliery will be handed back to the Land Trust following investment from the East Midlands Development Agency (Emda) via the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Investment from the HCA’s National Coalfields Programme has cleaned up the site, and created a landscaped gateway entrance to the Pleasley Pit Country Park. The Land Trust will now take responsibility for the site’s care and future development.

Diana Gilhespy, executive director of regeneration at Emda, said: “It’s fantastic news that work at Pleasley has now been completed. The scheme has combined a wonderful monument to honour the former mining community with space for top-quality business and housing facilities. This will bring real economic opportunities to people living and working in the area.”

The work on the site was carried out by contractor Robert Woodhead under the supervision of architects practice William Saunders.

Alex Gibson, partner at William Saunders, said: "The site is unique and fully justifies its Scheduled Monument status. This phase of work has been challenging at times but has consolidated the buildings to ensure their survival for public appreciation for years to come."
