Meaty deal for Telford farmer

Share | |

A farmer from Telford has won a contract to begin stocking his handmade sausages in the Wolverhampton branch of supermarket Waitrose. The deal comes hot on the heels of David Haighton’s contract wins with several local pubs and Waitrose in Shropshire.

Haighton produces GM-free breakfast and onion marmalade sausages from pigs he began farming two years ago. He supplies them through his company Muckleton Meats.

Haighton said: “I make all my own sausages by hand, because I am so fussy. I like pigs, they are very intelligent animals and the Old Spot piglets are very cute – not like the modern pig. My pigs have a very high standard of welfare and want for nothing.”

A spokesman from Waitrose said: “At Waitrose, we are committed to supporting suppliers within the local area and we are always delighted when we come across farmers like David who manufacture top quality produce themselves naturally, without the use of antibiotics or additives in the animals’ feed.

"One sampling of David Haighton’s sausages convinced us of their superior quality, and the fact the pigs are able to roam free means they have a very high standard of welfare, and you can really taste the difference.”
