Birmingham prepares for Papal visit

Birmingham City Council has called Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the region “a big day for all Birmingham faiths”. The visit, which will take place on Sunday, is expected to generate revenues of up to £12.4m for the city.

As one of three locations to be visited by the Pope, the local economy is expected to receive a boost from the sales of memorabilia, including replica ‘Popemobiles’, bags and t-shirts.

Councillor Rudge said: “I chair a group which has representation from all the major faiths. Religious leaders throughout the city get together on a regular basis to discuss a wide range of increasingly relevant issues.

"I think it’s important to maintain that dialogue because it harmonises community cohesion, something I lead on for Birmingham City Council, helping the city get on with itself and be comfortable with itself. That in turn helps make this a great place to visit, to work in and to live in.”

The Birmingham leg of the visit will be centred on the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman at Cofton Park, Birmingham.
