CRC registration warning

Businesses in the East Midlands are being urged to sign up to the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. Datacentre specialist on365, based in Loughborough, says that CRC registration red tape could cost UK business up to £1.5m in fines if they fail to sign up before the 30 September deadline.

More than 3,000 UK businesses face heavy penalties if they miss the deadline. If registration is not completed, businesses face a maximum fine of £45,000.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme was launched in April this year and is a new mandatory energy-saving and carbon-emission reduction scheme for the UK. It aims to ensure organisations contribute to the UK's emission reductions of at least 34 per cent through improved energy efficiency.

According to on365, less than a third of the estimated 5,000 or so businesses and public sector organisations expected to be affected by the CRC have registered so far. Failure to act in the next few days could mean that these businesses might be caught out by the Environment Agency's application process and required checks, which could take up to four weeks, and miss the registration deadline.

On365 said that “the monetary penalties of missing the deadline could be financially crippling for a number of CRC eligible businesses, and to add to this, the reputational damage from a company being listed as non-compliant could be irreversible.

“Companies need to wake up and take heed of steps to tackling the compliance available to them, the key milestones over the next 12 months and get cracking - administration delays could mean the application takes longer than the 18 working days remaining.”

Failure to meet the registration deadlines could prove costly, with businesses facing a £5,000 fee and an additional charge of £500 per day, with up to a maximum of a £45,000 fine.
