Nottingham beats London to be least car dependent city
Nottingham has topped a table for the best public transport and the least car-dependent city. Campaign for Better Transport's latest research shows that Nottingham is the lcity least dependent on cars in England, followed by London and Brighton and Hove.
The new research shows that in many cities people are locked into driving cars rather than choosing to use them. Campaign for Better Transport's Car Dependency Scorecard examines for the first time how dependent we are on cars in major cities - and suggests providing sustainable transport choices would be a solution, creating a greener and less congested urban environment.
It uses data from 17 different sources to rank 19 cities in England.
Councillor Jane Urquhart, portfolio holder for transport at Nottingham City Council, said: "We have been at the forefront of making public transport a viable alternative to the car in Nottingham for many years, so it is heartening to have our efforts recognised in this way.
"We have a great network of modern buses, well-establish Park & Ride sites connecting major employers, a very popular tramway and plenty of pedestrianised streets and cycle routes - all of which help to make Nottingham the pleasant, welcoming and accessible city it is.
"We're looking to build on this success by expanding our tramway, transforming our train station and improving our bus network."
