Leisure centre opens after redevelopment

The Meadowside Leisure Centre in Burton-upon-Trent has opened following a £3.5m facelift. The newly refurbished centre includes a children’s play area, fitness centre and multi-purpose studio.

The leisure centre closed its doors in October 2009, and has now been transformed into an “iconic development”, said East Staffordshire Borough Council’s chief executive Andy O’Brien.

New facilities include an entrance, foyer and café area, fitness centre, changing facilities, a children’s play area and a multipurpose studio. The existing pools have been transformed with a new ‘village style’ pool changing area and new viewing areas.

O’Brien said: "Before we had an uncoordinated, tired and very much outdated facility. And now it has been transformed on time and on budget into an iconic development. You could say it has transformed beyond all recognition and is sure to be a credit to the town."

The project was completed by a Nottingham-based team including Maber architects, building company Rok and structural engineers Elliot Wood. Edmond Shipway was the project manager and service consultant.
