Arup, the design specialist based in Nottingham, has been recognised for its contribution to the UK-China business relationship at a national awards ceremony. The company has operated in China for more than 30 years and has worked on more than 500 projects.

The Queen Street-based company, an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists was presented with the Sustainability Award.

Arup has worked on projects including the structural design of the Sydney Opera House and work on the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as sports venues such as the Bird's Nest Stadium, skyscrapers, airports and railways.

Supported by UK Trade & Investment, the British Business Awards recognise the highest levels of achievement and commitment to trade and investment between the two countries.

Speaking from the awards ceremony in Shanghai, UK Trade & Investment chief executive Sir Andrew Cahn said: "UK-China relations are growing at a rapid pace. Already this year UK exports of goods to China have increased by 45 per cent, while last year more than 74 Chinese companies invested in the UK.

"It's companies like these, doing business on the ground, which are strengthening our business ties."
