South Staffordshire College will receive up to £1m in funds for building projects. It is one of only 15 colleges to receive the pledge nationally, and will use the investment to refurbish existing facilities and build a new teaching block.

Business secretary Vince Cable has announced that 149 colleges across England will benefit from £50m of government funding to invest in new buildings and renovate existing ones.

Colleges will each receive a renewal grant of up to £225,000, with some successful bidders including South Staffordshire College winning extra government funds, taking their totals up to £1m.

South Staffordshire College has confirmed that it will invest an additional £2.5m in a brand new learning and teaching block at its Rodbaston campus, which will include a new refectory.

The college will also be refurbishing the hall at its Rodbaston campus, enabling them to locate the corporate headquarters to Rodbaston, as well as upgrading learning and teaching areas and conference facilities.

Chief executive principal, Graham Morley, said: “This is fantastic news not just for us at the college, but for our existing and future learners who come from far and wide including from Staffordshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire and the West Midlands.

“This is the first stage of our estates strategy and we have ambitious plans to continue to invest in our other campuses over the next decade.”
