New duty free store planned for Birmingham Airport
Travel retailer World Duty Free (WDF) has announced plans to open up a new store in Birmingham Airport as part of the site’s expansion plans. The store will replace the existing Alpha Airport Shopping Centre in terminal one, and will cover 19, 300 ft of retail space.
From spring next year, all passengers will transfer through a new central search area and the two existing airport terminals will become one.
The existing store in terminal one will be replaced with the new World Duty Free store which will sit in the new International Departure Lounge (IDL).
The other Alpha Airport Shopping store currently located in terminal two will be transformed into an ‘express’ World Duty Free store.
The main World Duty Free store will feature a unique new design approach based on a ‘shopping mall’ format, according to WDF.
Fred Creighton, retail operations director at WDF, said: “The plans that Birmingham has for its airport are extremely exciting and we are delighted to be part of these and have the opportunity to create such an impactful and innovative new store.
“We will work in close partnership with the team at Birmingham to develop a store that provides a world class retail experience for its customers and maximises retail revenues for the airport.”
Richard Gill, Birmingham Airport’s head of commercial, described the plans as "visionary and inspirational".
