Jones Lang LaSalle’s Birmingham office has announced the sale of the former Typhoo Tea factory in Degbeth. The site has existing planning consent for a mixed-use scheme including 353 residential flats, 5,220 sq ft of commercial property and 188 car parking spaces.

The 2.6-acre site is located on the corner of Bordesley Street and New Canal Street and includes a 150,000 sq ft warehouse and office space.

The purchase was made by a private investor for an undisclosed fee. Jones Lang LaSalle said that the new owner currently had no plans for the future development of the site.

The firm’s residential and development team was acting on behalf of Allsop LPP as fixed charge receiver.

Simon Dicken, associate director in the residential and development team in Birmingham which advised on the sale, said: “This landmark and historic site, well located near to the city centre, also falls within the proposed Eastside project a significant regeneration area which will extend Birmingham out to the east.”

Typhoo tea was produced at the site until the late 1970s. The building was then used for a variety of purposes before it became vacant in 1999.
