Birmingham Co-op branch funds Unison HQ

The Birmingham Corporate Banking Centre of the Co-operative Bank has financed a new headquarters for trade union Unison. The multi-million pound centre is being constructed on the site of a former hospital in London, and is due to open by the end of this year.

The majority of the funding for the project was provided by The Co-operative Bank with a contribution from Unity Trust Bank, a specialist bank for unions, charities, credit unions, voluntary organisations and social enterprises.

The 75,000 sq ft development on the site of the former Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital will provide office space in two buildings for Unison’s 300 staff.

The grade two-listed hospital has now been restored and is linked to a new office building by a glass atrium.

Forty seven apartments and two- and four-storey mews houses will be provided across the one-acre site for key workers.

The Birmingham office of law firm Hammonds provided legal advice to The Co-operative Bank and the Midlands office of property agent Colliers International acted as building monitor.
