RBS to close Telford office

Share | |

Royal Bank of Scotland is to cut 3,500 jobs across the UK, with 12 offices under threat of closure in England. They include the bank’s operation in Telford, which has been earmarked for closure in 2012.

RBS, which is more than 80 per cent government-owned, is making the cuts from its technical and back office division.

It is understood that the job cuts include 1,000 in IT support and 2,500 in support services. RBS has cut 21,500 staff since 2009 as part of its restructuring plan.

The sale of 318 branches to Santander is responsible for approximately a third of the job losses.

The bank had been told by the European Commission to reduce the number of branches it operated from, amid concerns about competition.

Unite the union has described the announcement as a "horror story".

Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer, said: "The news that the Royal Bank of Scotland is to cut another 3,500 staff from across the UK is a horror story.

"It will be a specially bitter pill for staff to swallow as RBS has decided to move some of the jobs abroad to the Far East, India and America.”
