Up to 26 applicants per job in West Midlands
Job applicants in the West Midlands are facing tough competition with up to 26 applications being submitted for each vacancy, Insider can exclusively reveal. In the East Midlands, applicants are faring slightly better where up to 16 people are applying for every one vacancy.
The West Midlands has also experienced a sharp drop in public sector recruitment which fell 13 per cent in the second quarter, according to research from recruitment website totaljobs.com. Similarly, the East Midlands’ public sector recruitment suffered with an 8 per cent fall.
However, both regions experienced a rise in the number of private sector jobs being snapped up. The West Midlands had a 14 per cent rise in Q2, while the East Midlands experienced a rise of 13 per cent in private sector recruitment.
Typically, the average for those submitting applications for jobs were up against seven other applicants, according to the totaljobs.com "barometer". The worst-case scenario involved 26 applicants per place for the West Midlands and 16 for the East Midlands.
The West Midlands also had a 34 per cent rise in recruitment for the customer services sector and a 24 per cent rise in the marketing and PR industry.
At the other end of the scale, the number of job posts for the health and not-for-profit sectors were down 31 per cent and 27 per cent respectively.
In the East Midlands, the most popular job posts were in the management and consultancy and catering and hospitality industries, which experienced rises of 28 per cent and 24 per cent respectively.
