Tough year for business students, says Aston expert
A Midlands business school expert has told Insider it is “a worrying time” for the estimated 200,000 A Level students set to miss out on higher education places across the country today. Simon Jones, undergraduate admissions and marketing manager at Aston Business School, spoke as the institution prepared to turn down students, who receive their A Level results today, at its oversubscribed school.
Jones said: “It’s fairly unprecedented that there is such a clamp down on numbers [of places] and funding. It’s tough this year as there can be no compromise on grades.”
He said that students have not made the cut will have to rethink their options.
“Many students will take a year out, or go back to college to retake exams if they received disappointing results," said Jones. “Of course, they have an insurance choice, but if they’ve not made the grade for either choice, it’s those students I feel worried for”.
Jones added he did not expect to see any changes to the way the university system is run.
“I would imagine it will remain this [oversubscribed] way. I can’t see the government wanting to increase the number of places as that would mean more funding.”
