Sun4u administration hits holidaymakers

A Birmingham-based tour operator has collapsed into administration. Sun4u, which has operated flights mainly to Spain, employs 40 people in its call centre and had approximately 50,000 customers per year. The company is believed to have suffered due to ash cloud crisis in April this year.

About 1,200 Britons are believed to be stranded abroad following the collapse of the company. Sun4u made the announcement via its website.

The company employed 20 full-time and another 20-part time staff.

The collapse comes following the closure of the company's only shop in Birmingham city centre earlier this year.

London-based administrator Antony Batty has reportedly been appointed to oversee the administration.

The statement on the site read: “Sun 4 U Limited has ceased trading as of 11 August 2010 at 2100hrs. For further information, please contact the Association of British Travel Agents’ claim handlers CEGA.”

The collapse of the company, which has a reported turnover of approximately £20m, comes just weeks after the demise of another tour operator, Goldtrail. The London-based travel firm went bust leaving 14,000 holidaymakers stranded and another 2,000 people due to go on holiday. It specialised in holidays to Greece and Turkey.

Mark Fry and Jamie Taylor, of Begbies Traynor, were appointed administrators of Goldtrail Travel on 16 July 2010 when the company ceased trading.

Sun4u mainly operated holidays to Spain, which is where the majority of its customers have been holidaying. Those that have booked ATOL (Air Travel Operators' Licensing) package holidays with the company are advised to contact the Civil Aviation Authority.

The company’s administration could not have been timed worse for holidaymakers abroad as staff at BAA's six major airports have voted for strike action.
