Leicestershire tourism worth £1.3bn
The tourism industry in Leicester and Leicestershire contributed £1.3bn to the local economy in the 2009/10 financial year, figures from non-profit tourism body Leicester Shire Promotions indicate.
According to the statistics, the number of direct and indirect short break bookings in the period rose to more than 10,800. The report also found that tourism is the second fastest-growing industry in Leicester and Leicestershire.
The organisation claims that its "Stay Play Explore" campaign provided a 20 to one return on investment, while the city recorded an 18 to one return on investment.
Martin Peters, chief executive of Leicester Shire Promotions, said: "These figures include industry-leading achievements on a regional and national level. To achieve these successes, we have employed leading-edge technologies, innovative processes and profiling techniques, and unique campaigns to support our strategically targeted activity.
"In challenging economic times, particularly for the public sector, this is clear evidence that the local tourism industry continues to demonstrate growth and, subsequently, should be supported through continued investment."
Leicester Shire Promotions is a private, not-for-profit company formed as a partnership between Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council and East Midlands Development Agency.
