Binding Site buys Calthorpe House - sources

Medical technologies company The Binding Site has bought the freehold of Calthorpe Estates’ Calthorpe House, Insider understands.

Sources suggest The Binding Site has acquired the 106,000 sq ft office building in Edgbaston, Birmingham, and will be re-locating its operations from its existing base in the nearby suburb of Kings Heath. The move has not been confirmed.

Calthorpe House has been marketed as the next generation of sustainable building by Calthorpe Estates.

The £40m grade-A space scheme is BREEAM excellent rated and has an energy performance certificate rating of B. The Binding Site specialises in diagnostic equipment to test for a form of bone marrow cancer and other illnesses. It is a University of Birmingham spin-off and was set up by Jo Bradwell, a professor of medicine at the university, in 1983.

Last year, the auto-immune part of the business, which specialises in developing tests for problems such as coeliac disease, was sold off for more than £80m.

Last month, hair replacement specialist Optima agreed a deal to move to new premises on The Calthorpe Estate. The company moved from George Road to Frederick Road on the estate, into the larger 2,200 sq ft premises.

Neither The Binding Site or Calthorpe Estates would confirm the deal when approached by Insider.
