Morgan Sindall director plans expansion

Construction company Morgan Sindall has told Insider it aims to expand after revealing a “solid” set of half-year results. The group, which is the parent company of Tamworth-based regeneration specialist Lovell and operates through four specialist divisions of construction and infrastructure, announced pre-tax profits of £23.1m - a slight decrease from 2009’s results of £23.9m.

However, Morgan Sindall’s area director for Birmingham, Dave Smith, told Insider: “The results were pretty much what we expected – we’re still in a very competitive market.” He also said the company would be focusing on expanding further into the aviation, transport, waste and higher education sectors to retain its position in the marketplace.

As a group, Morgan Sindall comprises office design and fit out specialist Morgan Lovell, which has offices in Birmingham; office refurbishment specialist Overbury, which has offices at Fort Dunlop, Birmingham; and affordable housing and regeneration specialist Lovell, which has its regional office in Woodgate Valley, Birmingham, and head office in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

Smith said that the integrated structure of the business has helped the company survive the tremulous past few years.

He said: “We are pretty well placed in the West Midlands to continue doing well and building good relationships with clients. We have a team ethos and a good approach, which is priceless.

“There was a slight dip in revenue this year, but that keeps us competitive”.

All four divisions posted a fall in income from 2009, including Staffordshire-based Lovell revealed revenues of £982m, a decrease on its £1.14bn result in 2009.

Smith said that four sectors which the group works within - aviation, transport, waste and higher education – were all “buoyant” and he was optimistic about working within them in the future.

He said: “These sectors work very well with our set-up, as the integrated groups are often necessary when working with clients in these industries. It allows us to offer more services to one client, which would stand us in good stead.

“Student accommodation is a particularly buoyant area", he added.

"We want to expand within all of these areas – unfortunately, opportunities at the moment are few and far between, but those opportunities are definitely growing.”
