European money backs aerospace build

Share | |

The University of Nottingham has been awarded a £3.6m grant to establish the Institute of Aerospace Technology. The money, from the European Regional Development Fund, will help to fund the construction of the research facility at the University’s Innovation Park. It will house around 100 staff.

Professor Andy Long, associate dean for research in the faculty of engineering, said: “The new institute will allow us to develop and deploy new technology and processes that are crucial to supporting the sector’s ability to meet stringent environmental targets. Research undertaken will also ensure a good supply of skilled people in areas of immediate interest to the sector.”

The centre will be developed in addition to a £35m portfolio of existing aerospace research at the university with more than 70 separate projects underway. This includes two Rolls-Royce University Technology Centres, working in the field of gas turbine transmissions and manufacturing, and a partnership with GE on electrical power systems.
