Cameron seizes Indian education opportunity
As part of ongoing efforts to boost relations between India and the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron has agreed an extension to the UK India Education Research Initiative. During his recent visit to the Subcontinent the Prime Minister confirmed his support for the programme alongside Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh.
The scheme will aim to build on nearly 600 new education partnerships that have been developed between the two countries and contribute to the development of India’s 14 ‘innovation universities’ through partnerships with UK institutions. Universities that have already shown an interest include Oxford Cambridge, Imperial College, Open University, Essex, Exeter, Birmingham and Newcastle.
Details of the programme are set to emerge before the end of the year. Professor Steve Smith, president of Universities UK, who was in India as part of the delegation, said: “I now look forward to returning in November in order to discuss further means of increasing the level of university partnership activity.”
Meanwhile Aston University will deliver a five-day programme entitled Global Leaders for Global Delivery on 18-22 October 2010 in Jamshedpur, India. The course is being held in conjunction with business school XLRI Jamshepur and is aimed at senior executives with global remits.
