Controversial Morrisons plans put back

Share | |

Birmingham Council has deferred its decision on the controversial Morrisons store proposed for Edgbaston. But the authority's planning committee said the planned supermarket, which could be constructed on the site of the former Edgbaston Shopping Centre, was “not appropriate”.

The planning committee will now defer the proposal to a later date, which has not yet been disclosed. A council spokesman told Insider that councillors claimed it was "not appropriate for a gateway site".

The proposal for the two-storey supermarket came under fire with 26 objections sent to the council. This included opposition to the design and layout of the proposed building with a lack of “detail, quality and ambition” cited in the planning report.

West Midlands police also raised concerns over the bid for the 50,870 sq ft store.

If approved at a later date, an estimated 300 jobs are set to be created including 114 full-time and 189 part-time positions.
