Council hires waste firm for £1bn

Staffordshire Council has appointed Veolia Environmental Services to manage the region’s waste in a £1bn deal. Waste management organisation Veolia will construct and manage the county’s energy from waste plants as part of Staffordshire’s ‘zero waste to landfill’ plan.

The project will run for 25 years and France-based Veolia will manage more than 300,000 tonnes of waste per annum after a two year procurement period.

Ian Benson, project director at the council, said the “ambitious” project was the council’s largest project to date.

Staffordshire County Council leader Philip Atkins said: “The contract will save Staffordshire taxpayers more than £250m over the next 25 years. This contract is all about protecting taxpayers from escalating costs and protecting the environment from mounting piles of rubbish.”

Law firm Eversheds advised Staffordshire County Council on the deal.
