Rural communities let down by internet providers

Countryside communities in the Midlands are being let down by their internet service providers, according to the the Country Land and Business association (CLA). Dr Charles Trotman, head of rural business development at the organisation, believes consumers are being short-changed by being declined the broadband speeds they have been led to expect by their ISPs.

He said: “Running a business in the West Midlands countryside is tough enough without the commercial disadvantage of broadband speeds way below what was promised.”

Trotman also criticised a lack of clarity from internet service providers in regards to surcharges applied to customers who regularly use internet-player services to catch up on television programmes.

He added that there are still many rural areas that are unable to receive broadband, and that the CLA in the Midlands would continue to put pressure on the government to facilitate high-speed internet across the region by 2012.
