New figures which show unemployment in West Midlands is down by 8.6 per cent have been described as “really good news for the region”.

Business leaders are also positive about the future of the region. Kiran Virk, policy adviser at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, said: “Thirty-six per cent [of businesses] said they expect to be recruiting over the next three months compared with 6 per cent in June 2009.”

Unemployment levels were down by 15,000 according to new figures from the National Office for Statistics. Virk said this drop could be attributed “mainly to the increase in the number of part time vacancies”.

She added: “The West Midlands has the smallest private sector in the English regions and much more must be done by national government to help and sustain a better economic environment for the business community.”
