Midcounties Co-op wins excellence award
The Midcounties Co-operative was named as a national ‘Example of Excellence’ at the UK’s leading sustainable business awards this week.
The society won the accolade for its “cooperative approach to education” which helped Sutherland School in Shropshire significantly improve its performance, having recently achieved a 70 per cent pass rate at GCSE level.
The awards, held in the Royal College of Music in London, were run by Business in the Community (BITC).
More than 50 colleagues from Midcounties gave 487 hours to support the project at Sutherland School, which is the first Co-operative Trust School in the community retailer’s trading area.
Anthony Salz, BITC judge and executive vice-chairman of Rothschild and co-chair of the Education & Employers Taskforce said:
“The partnership has delivered a range of impressive interventions including a programme on knife crime that the judges thought both highly innovative and impactful.”
